A guide to adding Portable Document Format (PDF) to your website using Elxis
Giving Your Visitors The Ability To View A Pdf Using Elxis
This document assumes that you have a basic understanding on how to publish a web page using Elxis.
First, create your PDF and using a naming scheme to keep your files both organized and in a proper format for any server.
It is preferable to use a hyphen or an underline rather than spaces to avoid file name problems. File names can be either upper / lowercase or a combination thereof including numbers.
Example using a hyphen Business-strategies- Feb-2008.pdf
Example using the underline Business_strategies_Feb_2008.pdf
ATTENTION:
It is always recommended that you use a Latin based character set and the hyphen or underline for all file names due to problems that can arise at some hosting servers.
More info about how files and folder must be named here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filename
ORGANIZING YOUR FILES IN DIRECTORIES OR FOLDERS
Using the elxis media manager, create a directory or folder to store your PDF files in an organized manner. The upload procedure can send up to six (6) files at one time to your server.
To create a new folder, click on the folder with the star next to the 777 and then give it a name.
The Pdf Upload Procedure
If you already have a folder to use, simply click on that folder and then click on BROWSE to locate each of the PDF on your local pc that you want to send – upload to your server, then click upload and you should receive a message from the program after the upload has been completed to continue with more uploads.
Creating The Page Or Adding A Pdf Link To An Existing Page
Either create a new page or use an existing page to place your PDF link.
Note: This will ONLY contain a link in the end not the PDF file.
Enter a title that you will use to show your visitors for your PDF file (as shown below in blue) or you can use the same title that you named the file.
Unpublish the page, unless it is already published, as you will now save it and return to it afterwards.
After You Have Uploaded Your Pdf
After you upload your PDF, simply click on the icon next to the yellow folder and that will show you the thumbnails correctly.
Click once on the PDF file that you want to use and a link will be displayed on the upper area (as shown below in blue).
You will copy this using (control-c, or ctrl-c as it is also known) and then return to the page in the content items.
Adding The Pdf Link
Open the page that you want the link to appear Grab the title that you wrote earlier (as shown left below on the in blue) Click on the chain icon (as shown left below on the toolbar in blue) and a new window will open.
In the General Tab, place your mouse cursor in the Link URL box and paste (ctrl-v) the link that you previously copied.
After this:
You can specify if you wish to have your PDF file open in a new window for the users by selecting TARGET – Open in new window. This is preferred so that users can see both your site and the PDF file.
You can add a different title on the title line if you wish. This is what provides additional information and appears when a user moves the mouse cursor over the link. Once this is done, click Insert.
You can align your link using the toolbar alignment, such as center, if you wish. Click on publish to make it visible to your visitors.
Save the page and your link should now be visible and present the PDF file to your visitors.
Viewing Your Pdf
To see the results of your work, use the Site – Preview – In new window to open a new browser to view your site, go to the page that you placed the link on, click the link and the PDF file will open.
If it works, then congratulations!
If it does not work, then re-read and retrace the above steps to find your error.
