eForum Terminology
A complete guide to eForum terminology (common words), abbreviations and their meanings.
- Admin / Administrator: Admins are those with access to the eForum backend, the Control Panel. They have full privileges, meaning that they can edit or delete all categories, boards, posts and so on. Administrators (Admins) and Moderators (Mods), work together, to manage a forum. Read more...
- Announcements: Sticky (kind of) messages that include rules and news. Announcements can be addressed to anyone, to specific forum groups or even to individual forum members. Only eForum administrators can manage announcements. Read more...
- Avatar: Small images (badges) that personalize a member's profile. Avatars help to quickly distinguish one user from another. Read more...
- Ban/Banned: If a member breaks the rules, they may be banned by a moderator or administrator. This renders the member's account useless, leaving them unable to post, send PMs, etc.
- BB Code: A set of tags providing formatting features, for your posts. Similar to HTML, but uses 'square' brackets instead of 'pointy' brackets, and offers fewer features. "BB" stands for "Bulletin Board".
- Board: Short for Message Board. Its an area within the forum, where topics of a similar nature are posted. Boards are organized into Categories. Read more...
- Double post: Two consecutive posts by the same member/user.
- Emoticon/Smiley: A small image that expresses a particular emotion. Available through the eForum editor, when posting.
- Flaming: The result of the discussion of heated real-world issues like politics, sports, religion exc.
- Flooding: Making many unwanted posts.
- Guest: A forum visitor, who has not yet registered as a member.
- Lock/Locked: A locked item (category, board, post) in which you can no longer post.
- Moderator(s): A member with rights to moderate (edit, move, delete, etc.) specific boards or a whole forum. Read more...
- Off topic: A post, unrelated to the topic. This is the easiest sin of all :)
- Post: A message submitted on the forum. To 'post' is to place a new topic or a reply. So, all contributions are posts!
- PM/Private Message: Contacting another member, privately, with the use of personal (1 to 1) messages. Read more...
- Profile: A registered member's personal details. May be viewable by the public (only other members).
- Signature: A tagline placed automatically below each post. Containing personalized quotes, words of wisdom, links, etc. Signatures are a privilege, that may be granted to some or all.
- Spam: Unwanted posts, usually consisting of linkspam. Spam is also used in a generic way, to refer to anything unwanted.
- Sticky - Sticky thread: A topic that always stays on the top of the list. Stickies are normally announcements by admins, or similar type of posts.
- Thread/Topic: An original message and its replies. An ordered list of a conversation, in sequence.
- Topic: The main theme of an original post, is its topic. In general it helps if replies stay on-topic, as that results in a logical discussion. Read more...
- User group: A group of registered users (members), having prearranged set of permissions. Read more...
- Username: A member's nickname / forum name. Usernames range from real names, through hard to decipher codenames, to the far out.
